Nicole Thomas

Research Fellow in eHealth – Engagement and Impact Assessment

Nicole qualified as a Dental Hygienist in 2004 and has worked in specialist hospital settings in Birmingham, high-end specialist practices in London and general practice in the South West. She moved into academia in 2015, studying the experiences of families taking their children with autism to the dentist. This was used to create a dental advocacy service, which helps families with children with complex needs visit the dentist and look after their teeth.

She has since completed a PhD which evaluated a multicomponent dental education intervention. The intervention used two-way text messaging and social messaging groups to support new mothers who may have had limited access to health services in the first year of their infant’s life. The intervention provided dental education and reassurance during infancy to help mothers maintain dental behaviours for their infants, particularly during the hardships of teething. In addition, she also carried out a study looking at the accuracy of detecting dental disease using digital images as a cheaper and easier way to examine child oral health.
