EPIC Student Internship Opportunity – App Development

Kirsty Marrs |28, June, 2022

Opportunity for a University of Plymouth Student to work with Elements of Pattern, a Cornish business, to rebuild their app that allows users to create interactive artwork that can be arranged in millions of combinations of patterns. The app requires development to fit the current technical requirements of the Android and iOS platforms. If you have a grounding in Unity/Xamarin this might be the ideal opportunity for you.

This is a paid internship starting in August 2022. The internship will last no longer than 7 weeks (but this is dependent upon project progression). Please refer to the job description for additional details.

If interested, please email a CV (no more than double sided A4) and cover letter (no longer than one side of A4) to epic@plymouth.ac.uk.
Please email if you have any questions prior to applying. Deadline Friday 15th July 2022 at 12:00pm.

Job Description

Elements of Pattern (EoP) created an interactive artwork that can be arranged in millions of combinations of patterns to create multiple novel designs. Its design allows others to be creative – at its least it is an amusing pastime, at best it is an active creative process and form of self-expression. Users generate their own unique and original artwork by combining a number of differently patterned tiles.

The internship

EoP previously translated their work onto an app platform, through work with a software developer who created builds to be played on both phones and tablets, for both Android and iOS. This original build has since become incompatible with the Apple Store’s continual updates, creating a requirement for the redevelopment of the app to fit with current technical requirements of the Android and iOS platforms.

EoP are seeking to rebuild the app for both Android and iOS platforms to a working proof of concept stage. This project is being run in collaboration with the University of Plymouth’s EPIC project. We anticipate the internship starting in August 2022 and would require the intern to be ready to start from then.

The role

We are looking for an intern who can rebuild the EoP app to fit the current technical requirements of the Android and iOS platforms. The internship will run for seven weeks, dependent upon project progression. The post will require you to work 22 hours per week. These hours can be flexible around your studies, and you will be paid £13 an hour for your time. The work will be remote, though on occasion, EoP would like to meet face to face in Cornwall. Travel costs to these meetings will be covered by the EPIC project.

The ideal applicant will:
• be a student in their 2nd year or above, or a postgraduate student, in either computing or arts with a grounding in software development for mobile platforms (essential);
• have prior mobile app development experience (desirable);
• have experience of using Unity and/or Xamarin language frameworks (essential);
• be a good communicator and able to work collaboratively during the development of the app (essential);
• be willing to explore how the app can be deployed on the Android and Apple app stores (desirable); and
• show enthusiasm for developing further app functionality that expands the range of options for the app’s use as an artistic outlet (desirable).
